Getting Ready for a Headshot

Headshots come in a number of styles.

Color backgrounds, environmental/outdoor type, natural lighting and more.

Headshot Style

Typically it’s vertical, common and universally accepted. Many times closer to the body. Backgrounds are varied but if shot indoors, a simple gray is classy and timeless.

Additionally, and Environmental/Outdoor Headshot is popular.

These headshots are shot outside or with an outdoors backdrop and many times shot with natural light. You’ll know a good outdoors headshot when you find that the background is blurry.

  • Solid colors look great.

  • Keep any pattern simple.

  • Slowly add layers during the shoot for varied looks.

  • Bring a few changes.

  • Be sure your clothes are wrinkle free unless you don't care. Photoshop editing to fix things later is costly.

  • Bring lip gloss, hair spray and a lint brush.

  • Don’t worry about shoes.

  • Take your favorite brush, hair product (gel/hairspray) with you.

  • Book a hair stylist for the morning of the shoot.

Makeup and Face
  • Natural is a great option but light makeup typically works best.

  • No matte styles of makeup. It will dry your skin.

  • Bring your makeup and moisturizer.

  • Bring lip balm/gloss.

  • Brush your lips with a toothbrush to get rid of dead skin.

  • Don’t do anything prior to the shoot that will irritate your face/skin.

  • Get rid of unwanted hair before the shoot. Clean brows and upper lip hair.

  • For the guys... Shave right before your shoot. Create clean lines!
